How does research link periodontal bacteria to other disease states?

Research shows that the bacteria involved in periodontal disease pass though saliva. These same pathologic bacteria enter the blood stream and travel to major organs and begin new infections.

Research is suggesting that this may:

• Contribute to the development of heart disease, the nation's leading cause of death.
• Increase a woman's risk of having a preterm, low birth weigh baby.
• Pregnant women with gum disease are seven times more likely to deliver preterm, low birth weight babies.
• Pose a serious threat to people whose health is compromised by diabetes, respiratory diseases, or osteoporosis
• Pose an additional risk for tobacco users

Why do you include a mouth rinse in the program?

Because Gum Disease Leads to Heart Disease                                              Gum disease, gingivitis and periodontitis, is predictive of future heart disease, diabetes, and reduced longevity.  The bacteria found in diseased gums are also found in diseased arteries.  Our mouth rinse additive is designed to help the immune system quell inflammation and eliminate pathologic bacteria from the mouth.

Clean Life can also be a stand alone approach to optimal oral health  

How does Clean Life work?
Lysozyme, present in the mouth rinse additive, is also present in body secretions.  In saliva and tears, Lysozyme kills gram positive bacteria by lysing their cell membrane.  Lysozyme cannot destroy the cell membrane of the pathologic gram negative bacteria, because it cannot breach the layer of protective Polysaccharide that surrounds them.  The Polysaccharide particles have a negative charge, and require positively charged minerals, specifically Calcium and Magnesium, to bind them together to create an effective defense shield. Thus minerals in the mouth protect pathologic bacteria.

So we included EDTA in the mouth rinse.  EDTA will bind up Calcium and Magnesium from the surface regions of the gram negative bacteria. Without Calcium and Magnesium, the negatively charged Polysaccharide molecules will repel one anothe, and the defense shield falls apart. Lysozyme is then allowed access to the cell membrane of the gram negative bacteria, killing them.

Thus, there is a synergy between EDTA and Lysozyme in the mouth rinse, and this is probably what is making the major difference. The reports that we are receiving from individuals on Rejuvetate are that their gum disease is clearing up and that their dentists are shocked.

The cardiology literature tells us that gum disease is playing an active role in cardiovascular disease. The bacterial infection involved in gum disease produces not just local, but systemic inflammation; CRP values are higher in individuals with gum disease than in individuals with pristine oral health. We also know that gum disease and periodontist are predictive of an increased cardiovascular event rate and overall death rate up to 15 years later. Thus, one of the reasons that our patients are demonstrating plaque regression by ultrasound is likely because we are cleaning up infection in the mouth.

Clean Life provides enough mouth rinse additive for both you and your partner. The idea here is to prevent the reoccurrence and exchange of mouth microbicrobial organisms between partners. Our mouth rinse additive is designed to help the immune system eliminate microbial organisms including viruses and bacteria and dissolve the plaque in your mouth. Three Clean Life mouth wash additive tablets are included in Step One. Each tablet may be added to 16 ounces of your favorite mouth wash containing not more that 10 % alcohol content.

STEP 2 DEFEND LIFE -- Targeted delivery Detox tablet

Why Detox and Eliminate?
Contamination of water, air, and food by numerous chemicals and non-essential elements is part and parcel of life in our complex, industrialized world. The accumulation of these toxins in your body poses a significant health risk. A number of symptoms and disease states have been linked to low-grade but chronic toxic metal exposure.
Are all ages effected?
Yes, both ends of the life spectrum are affected. A child with a blood Lead level at the upper limit of normal (10 mcg/dl) will have an IQ 7.5 points below that of a child with a blood Lead level of 0-1. Is your child having trouble in school? Girls with Lead levels of 3 mcg/dl demonstrate delayed onset of puberty. Body burdens of Mercury, Lead, and Cadmium are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and kidney disease. We could go on and on here - it's best to remove this stuff from our bodies.
Why not just "take a pill"?
Raw EDTA is poorly absorbed; only 2-4% of an ingested dose will get in to the blood stream. For this reason, detoxification with EDTA has required intravenous or rectal suppository delivery systems. These work, and are necessary in emergency or advanced toxicity situations, but IV and rectal EDTA systems are expensive and sometimes difficult to take, especially if your goal is long-term or preventative, slow but steady detoxification. Tablets containing EDTA are available, but we recognized that these raw tablets could causes GI tract irritation and that the acid in the stomach could alter or destroy the preparations. We needed a tablet that would not break down in the stomach acid.
What do you mean when you say the new "Targeted Delivery" approach?
Our enteric-coated detox tablet does not break down in the stomach acid. Many tablets on the market contain certain Detox ingredients but these raw tablets can cause GI tract irritation or the acid in the stomach could alter or destroy the preparations. We needed a tablet that would not break down in stomach acid.
Dr. Keith solved the absorption problem by developing an enteric-coated tablet, with a "Targeted Delivery" system, designed to accomplish the following goals:

• Achieve steady state delivery and constant blood levels.
• Avoid excessive destruction of the active agent by the liver.
• Smooth out blood levels for low dose drugs.
• Smooth out blood levels for drugs that have short half-lives.

We achieve this by coating the tablet with a safe oral non-toxic polymer that resists acid and remains intact in the stomach, but then immediately dissolves when the coated material enters the absorption region of the small intestine. This is desirable because most food nutrients and other active substances are absorbed in the small intestines and not in the stomach. Bypassing the stomach will then prevent the above mentioned problems and "target" the delivery of the desired substance to where it will be optimally absorbed---the small intestine. This supplement is safe, easy to take, and effective, and helps to eliminate environmental toxins and poisons, atom by atom, molecule by molecule. Defend Life is the first oral detoxification preparation to use these ingredients and our patented delivery system in combination.

STEP 3 RENEW LIFE -- Cell repair gel caps

The Cell Membrane is composed of fatty acids, phospholipids, cholesterol, and proteins. If the fatty acids are predominately unsaturated, the cell membrane will be elastic and permeable. Conversely, if your diet is rich in saturated or trans-fats, your cell membrane will be stiff and the cell will have trouble exchanging nutrients for wastes. Thus the recommendation that you minimize the intake of saturated fats (meat and dairy) and that you avoid trans-fats (margarine and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils), and instead enjoy non-refined vegetable, flax, and fish oils. Another key parameter of cell membrane health is its ratio of Phosphatidylcholine (PC) to Cholesterol. Red blood cells with too much Cholesterol and not enough PC will be rigid, and will have trouble wiggling through the capillaries of our micro-circulation. Platelets with a low PC to Cholesterol ratio are more likely to form inappropriate blood clots. Red cells and platelets rich in PC, on the other hand, will function as Mother Nature intended. The liver detoxifies blood borne wastes with enzymes bound to its cell membrane. A German drug firm developed a process by which Phosphatidylcholine rich in unsaturated fatty acids could be extracted from soybean PC, and this extract was used in Europe in the treatment of liver disease, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular disease, and certain neurological impairments (until the patent ran out - now nobody wants to talk about it; this material never made it to the US as extracts of natural products cannot be patented as drugs). The Med Fivecontains Phosphatidylcholine (PC), and of course we recommend that you minimize saturated fats, avoid trans-fats, and enjoy unprocessed vegetable, flax, and fish oils. We want you to have a Healthy Cell Membrane.

The Med Five™ contains all four of these Phospholipids that are normal components of the cell membrane and diminish as we age.

2. Phosphatidylserine (PS)
3. Phosphatidylinositol (PI)
4. Phosphatidylcholine (PC)

Why do our cells need this?
The combination of PC, PE, PS, PI, and Alpha Lipoic Acid will help the body to remove toxic deposits, squelch free radicals (see Free Radical article), emulsify and dissolve lipids (fat), and repair damaged cell and intracellular membranes. PC, PE, PS, and PI are all normal components of the healthy cell membrane. Phosphatidyl Choline (PC), our most important Phospholipid, is of critical importance in Cholesterol Metabolism and Cell Membrane Health. PC is a necessary co-factor in the process of Reverse Cholesterol Transport (transporting cholesterol out of the artery and back to the liver for elimination - see Cholesterol Transport article). PC, PE, PS, and PI are all normal components of the healthy cell membrane.

Why is Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) so important?
Alpha-Lipoic Acid is as close as Mother Nature could come to an Ideal Antioxidant, so we decided to include it in The Med Five. ALA works in the circulation, the cell membrane, and within the cell fluid; ALA is the most versatile antioxidant that we are aware of. ALA can regenerate other antioxidants if they are in short supply, it has the ability to remove toxic metals, and it has a unique efficacy in diabetes and diabetic neuropathy. ALA is so important that it gets in own article – see Lipoic Acid article.
